Power & Communication Interface

Overview

The S-Series Modem Power & Communication Interface consists of a single wet-mate bulkhead connector available to provide power and communicate via Ethernet at 10/100 Mbps, RS-232, or RS-422 full-duplex. The pinout depends on which modem communication interface was ordered: Ethernet, RS-232, or RS-422.

The figure below shows the electrical connections for the Power & Communication Interface. All signal directions are relative to the S-Series Modem.

Connector face view

This is the face view of the male connector. S1000LI internal-battery variations and S1000RP-F variations have a female connector, and the pinout will appear mirror-imaged. S1000RP remote-powered variations have a male connector.

RS-232 variation

For RS-232 variations, the positions of TX and RX are different for -01 PMM4511 and -00 PMM3511 modems. Refer to the correct table below.

S1000LI/S1000RP-F Connector Hardware Components

The S1000LI/S1000RP-F Power & Communication Interface connector is a MacArtney SubConn Micro Circular 8-pin female aluminum bulkhead connector, P/N MCBH8FAS, with integral male locking sleeve threads.

The Power & Communication Interface is connected using a MacArtney SubConn Micro Circular 8-pin male inline cable, P/N MCIL8M, and female locking sleeve, P/N MCDLS-F BLUE. The S1000LI comes with a power-down plug mounted, which keeps pins 7 and 8 shorted and the modem powered down. The install kit for S1000LI also includes an inline cable adapter, Popoto PDI board, battery charger, and dummy plug for easy interfacing with the modem.

S1000RP Connector Hardware Components

The S1000RP Power & Communication Interface connector is a MacArtney SubConn Micro Circular 8-pin male aluminum bulkhead connector, P/N MCBH8MAS, with integral male locking sleeve threads.

The Power & Communication Interface is connected using a SubConn Micro Circular 8-pin female inline cable, P/N MCIL8F, and female locking sleeve, P/N MCDLS-F BLUE. Both are included in the S1000RP install kit.

Mating Cable Notes

Connector handling

Connectors must be greased with MOLYKOTE 44 Medium before every mating.

  • Disconnect by pulling straight out, not at an angle.
  • Do not pull on the cable and avoid sharp bends at cable entry.
  • Ensure that there are no angular loads on the bulkhead connector.
  • SubConn connectors should not be exposed to extended periods of heat or direct sunlight. If a connector becomes very dry, soak it in fresh water before use.
  • The locking sleeve must be hand-tightened only.
  • If using RS-422, mating cables should use twisted-pair wiring for pins 1/2 and 3/4.
  • If using Ethernet, mating cables should use twisted-pair wiring, ideally 100 ohm differential impedance, for pins 1/2 and 3/4.
  • Color codes may differ for unterminated inline cables depending on vendor. Refer to the connector pinout above for pin and signal locations, and verify with a digital multimeter before terminating.
